Newsletter veteran joins The Pohly Company to head Fuel Publishing business unit
BOSTON, March 21, 2006 — Bill Dugan, former marketing director of the largest paid-subscription health newsletter in the world, has joined The Pohly Company as vice president and general manager of Fuel Publishing, a new business unit created as part of a larger growth plan at the company. The Pohly Company is a customer communications company that provides marketing and publishing services to brands, associations, and magazine publishers across the U.S.
Dugan is responsible for converting Fuel, a free newsletter focused on improving customer communication strategies, into a paid-subscription publication. Dugan is also responsible for developing additional newsletter products and services targeting those who seek unconventional wisdom from experts in the fields of marketing, communications, association management, and human resources.
“Bill is the real deal. During his 18 years in the newsletter business, he has developed successful B2B newsletters from scratch and grown existing families of newsletters. He is the perfect leader to take the helm of Fuel and migrate the publication’s platform to a subscriber-supported business,” said Diana Pohly, president of The Pohly Company.
Prior to joining Pohly, Dugan worked for nine years at Briefings Publishing Group (formerly Georgetown Publishing House) in Alexandria, Va., most recently as Group Publisher. In that role, he produced nine business advice newsletters, including American Speaker, Communication Briefings, and The Organized Executive.
During Dugan’s tenure as publisher of Aram Bakshian’s public-speaking newsletter American Speaker, the newsletter received a first-place journalism prize for unique and powerful advice by the Newsletter and Electronic Publishers Association.
From 1988 to 1997, Dugan was director of marketing at the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) in Washington, D.C., where he increased the circulation of Nutrition Action Healthletter from 100,000 to over 1 million, making it the largest paid-subscription health newsletter in the world.
Dugan also served as publisher of Letitia Baldrige’s business etiquette newsletter, Executive Advantage. Baldrige was Jackie Kennedy’s chief of staff and social secretary to the White House during John F. Kennedy’s presidency.
Dugan has received numerous awards for his work, including the MAXI Award from the Direct Marketing Association of Washington, and the Axel Andersson Award from Target Marketing magazine, both awarded for a direct mail package designed to boost circulation of Nutrition Action Healthletter.
He received a bachelor of arts degree in political science from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Dugan is a native of Weymouth, Mass., and now resides in Hanover, Mass.
